Having a Singular Vision

Skype fumbled the biggest bag ever.

Imagine having a 15-year head start on video calling, global adoption, brand recognition, then… 2020 happened.

They should’ve owned their category, but they didn’t. Why?

Same story with these companies:

👉 Blockbuster → Streaming

👉 Kodak → Digital Cameras

👉 BlackBerry → Smartphones

Success creates comfort and hubris…

… comfort and hubris creates blind spots…

… blind spots miss opportunity.

The moment a company thinks, “We’re safe,” someone hungrier is already building their replacement.

Zoom didn’t try to be the best Swiss Army knife, they just created a better version of one tool.

They offered a clean, consistent, predictable platform, which was much more user friendly to the dated and clunky feeling Skype.

So a lesson for us all, are we building for the future, for where our customers are going, or are we stuck in the past, where our customers used to be?
